Household Hazardous Waste Collection

The City of Holyoke Department of Public Works will be holding a Household Hazardous Waste Collection on Saturday, October 10, 2015. The collection will take place at the DPW Garage at 63 Canal Street from 9 AM to noon. The collection will be free of charge to Holyoke residents with a ten-gallon limit per household.

Holyoke residents will be required to preregister with the DPW, starting on October 5, 2015 prior to the collection day. To preregister, call 322-5645, weekdays between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM.

Veoila Environmental Services of Marlborough, MA has been chosen as the hazardous waste contractor for this event. Residents are asked to bring household materials such as pesticides, metal polishes, spot and upholstery cleaners, fluorescent light tubes, chlordane, antifreeze, brake fluid, and other automotive products, moth balls, photo chemicals, rust inhibitors, rechargeable batteries, and pool and spa chemicals. All these products are hazardous to the environment and are illegal to be poured down the drain or put in the trash.

The collection will not accept car batteries, asbestos, medicine or other medical waste, smoke detectors, gas cylinders, empty containers, or radioactive materials. For more information on how to dispose of these items, call the DPW.
