Mayor Morse sponsoring Team for American Cancer Society Relay for Life

Mayor Alex Morse is sponsoring a team of City employees at the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Holyoke Chicopee. Holyoke will be represented with the team name of “City of Holyoke”. There will be 12 employees walking this year in the event. The Team Captain is the Municipal Wellness Coordinator in the Board of Health and other participating departments include: Mayor’s Office, Planning Department, Parks & Recreation Department, Department of Public Works, Public Library, Police Department, Schools, and Holyoke Gas & Electric.

The Relay is held at Szot Park in Chicopee and is a 19-hour overnight walk to honor cancer survivors, pay tribute to the lives lost to the disease, and raise money to help find a cure. The Relay will begin Friday, May 8th at 6:00 p.m. with an Opening Ceremony including remarks by Mayor Morse followed by a lap for cancer survivors. A favorite event of the Relay each year is the Luminary Ceremony that will be held on Friday at 9:00 p.m. This includes the lighting of hundreds of luminary bags lining the track, each representing a person touched with cancer. The lights are turned off so that only the glow of the bags if left. The event will end with closing ceremonies to be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday May 9th.
