Holyoke Arbor Day To Be Celebrated at Holyoke Public Library

Holyoke is announcing that the City’s 2015 Arbor Day celebration will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday April 30, 2015 at the Holyoke Public Library.  Representatives from the Department of Conservation and Recreation, TD Bank, and Mayor Alex B. Morse will help the City celebrate Arbor Day with a diverse and engaging program.

The event will feature the planting of Ten (10) trees on the grounds of the library, songs about trees, as performed by students at Lawrence School, tree-themed performances by the Enchanted Circle Theater, free books for Lawrence School Students, a Mayoral Arbor Day Proclamation and volunteers from TD Bank.

This year’s event will feature an increased number of plantings over previous years due to tree funding that has been provided to the City by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, under the Greening the Gateway Cities program, which provides free shade and ornamental trees to Holyoke residents.

Also, Holyoke was a recipient of a TD Green Streets award this year, which allows for greater community outreach and celebration around this year’s Arbor Day event.  TD Green Streets is a grant program from TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®, and the Arbor Day Foundation which is designed to support innovation in urban forestry. Holyoke’s grant has funded projects throughout Holyoke, including community outreach, education and innovative watering strategies that will involve youth.
“This is an exciting partnership,” said Mayor Alex B. Morse, “because it highlights a lot of the positive momentum that has coalesced around urban forestry in Holyoke over the past two years.”  He noted that the City has been successful in receiving funding for planning and implementation projects to reforest and beautify Holyoke’s neighborhoods.

"TD Bank is proud to award TD Green Streets grant to these municipalities for enhancing their green spaces through urban forestry projects," said Joe Doolan, Head of Environmental Affairs for TD Bank. "We're committed to being an environmental leader, and our work with the Arbor Day Foundation helps us do that in communities across our footprint."

TD Banks involvement is a boon to the City’s tree planting efforts because it places Holyoke within an international group of cities that are working hard to increase forest canopy within their urbanized areas.

TD Green Streets is a component of TD Forests, a North American initiative that helps protect critical forest habitats equal to the amount of paper the bank uses each year. Together, these programs underscore the bank’s commitment to forest protection and stewardship, and are a direct investment in the health of our urban tree canopy.  Funding is provided by TD Bank and the program is administered by the Arbor Day Foundation.

“This is an excellent opportunity to work with great national partners like TD Bank and Arbor Day to build upon our urban forestry planting initiatives,” Said Holyoke Mayor Alex B. Morse.

Along with Holyoke, the following municipalities were awarded TD Green Streets grants in 2015:

   Bridgeport, CT
   Miami Gardens, FL
   Chicopee, MA
   Holyoke, MA
   Lawrence, MA
   Asheville, NC
   Bronx, NY
   Abington, PA
   Philadelphia, PA
   Alexandria, VA

To be eligible for a TD Green Streets grant, qualified municipalities were required to be current Arbor Day Foundation Tree City USA®-designated communities within TD Bank’s United States footprint. Tree City USA® is the nation’s premier urban and community forestry program, providing a foundation for effective, well-organized community tree care.
